Seven mornings with the qalam
A beginners course in qalam calligraphy at Samaze Art in Rooty Hill, taught over seven Thursday mornings from 3 December to 14 January. It is pitched at all levels of skill: if you have never held a qalam you start at the first stroke, and if you have some practice behind you the letter-by-letter classes tighten what you already know.
The course works through the Thuluth script from its basic strokes and angles, then takes each letter in detail, with a recorded video of every letter to practise with between classes. From there you learn how the letters connect, and the course closes with a final assignment.
Seven classes in total, every week from 10:00am to 11:30am. Open to ages fourteen and up. The course fee is $150.
What you'll learn
By the end of the seven weeks
Hold the qalam correctly and lay down the basic strokes and angles of the Thuluth script.
Write every letter of the alphabet in Thuluth, with a recorded video of each one to practise against.
Connect letters into words, knowing how each one changes shape when it joins.
Complete a final assignment of your own in the script.

Before you enrol
Do I need any experience?
No. The course targets all levels of skill. If you have never held a qalam you start with the basic strokes and angles, and if you have some practice behind you the letter-by-letter classes build on it.
How old do I need to be?
Fourteen and up.
When are the classes?

What script will I learn?
