About

Warfare, mercy and justice in the Seerah

Shaykh Hamza Karamali goes through what ghazwah and sariyyah mean and why the historians of the Seerah did not use the word harb. He covers the twenty years of persecution, intimidation, torture, starvation and assassination attempts, the expeditions that ended without a single death, the treatment of prisoners, and why the conquest of Makkah itself provides evidence of the Prophethood of Muhammad.

The lecture

From ghazwah to the conquest of Makkah

  1. 01

    The words the historians chose

Why the compilers of the Seerah wrote of ghazwah and sariyyah, expeditions, and never once reached for harb, the Arabic word for war.

  2. 02

Twenty years before the first battle

Persecution, boycott, torture, starvation, exile and repeated attempts on the life of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.

  3. 03

    The expeditions, counted

The ones that ended without a single death, and the overall figures across the whole period once you actually add them up.

  4. 04

    How captives were treated

The command to feed a prisoner before you feed yourself, and what that command looked like when it was carried out.

  5. 05

    Why Makkah proves prophethood

The city taken without a battle, and why that day is evidence for the Prophethood of Muhammad rather than an awkward chapter to explain away.
